Massachusetts Assisted Living Blaze Claims Nine Lives
Speaking at a press conference Monday morning, Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon announced the grim toll: nine fatalities and more than 30 individuals hospitalized, one of whom remains in critical condition.
"We had an unspeakable tragedy here in Fall River last night. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. I'm prepared to tell you that nine people lost their lives in this building last night," Bacon stated. "We have one in critical condition, but we had over 30 transported."
Emergency crews were dispatched to the Gabriel House on Oliver Street around 9:30 p.m. local time (0130 GMT Monday), where they encountered intense flames engulfing the facility's main entrance, the Fall River Fire Department reported.
Roughly 70 residents were inside the building at the time of the incident. Five firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling the blaze.
To support affected families, officials have set up a reunification center at St. Anne's Hospital.
Investigators from the Fall River Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are currently examining the cause of the fire.
